Butomus umbellatus or 'flowering rush' is one of six aquatic plants illustrated for the RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show 2023. The exhibit was titled 'Macrophytes in the emergent zone of Britain's fresh waters'. This series of paintings were awarded an RHS Gold medal and received the 'Best Botanical Art Exhibit' award.

The original watercolour is a painting of the whole plant, with roots, fruiting seed heads and male and female flower dissections shown separately. The aim of this illustration is to show all the key ID features of this plant as well as to showcase its beauty as a whole and then up close in all its details. The water line has been illustrated to show the plant above and below the water’s surface, to convey its habitat and how the plant emerges from the water.

Butomus umbellatus has been paired with Typha latifolia and the water lines have been illustrated at the same height to match because they are both very tall plants of a similar height, and both have long narrow leaves.

The six macrophytes are intended to be displayed together as a set but can also be enjoyed in pairs, small groups or individually.
